Critical to the success of any business is the efficient and effective transfer of knowledge and skills. Unfortunately, many employees are swamped with their regular day-to-day responsibilities
and have limited time to receive training.
Compounding this training predicament is the amount of time between learning something and being able to apply it. If
what an employee learns is not put to use within a short period of time, it will be forgotten.
With the fast paced introduction of new products and technology, employees can often find themselves performing tasks and/or promoting products for which they have had little or no training or knowledge.
Just-in-Time (JIT) information is a proactive way of providing information to employees that is highly relevant to what they are currently doing and
therefore has almost immediate application. The goal of JIT information is to provide employees with:
• just the right information. • at just the right time. Most commonly delivered via the company's Learning Management System, employees can search for relevant JIT courses 24 hours a day and instantly learn something new or refresh their knowledge whenever they need it. Since JIT information is accessed at the time it is required for a particular task, it is particularly helpful when the information
is too extensive to easily retain. JIT synchronizes an employee's current situation with relevant information and helps prevent information
overload. Instead of sitting through a lengthy training program, of which only a small portion is relevant to the employee, JIT provides small
chunks of information that are highly targeted to the employee's role. With this approach, employees are not bombarded with irrelevant
information they have no need to know and will most likely never use.
JIT information allows the employee to decide when and what information is needed, helps reduce the amount of prior training required, and places less demand on their memory. Being able to access information relevant to the task they are currently performing also reduces stress and allows employees to reinforce their knowledge and advance their skill set without having to attend additional formal training. When implementing JIT information, a layered approach is often used. Each layer of information builds on the previous layer and provides easy
comprehension and a solid knowledge base. An example of JIT information delivery is Russell Associates' ProdCasts, which deliver product
information to salespeople, prospects, and staff in quick segments when they need it, making it easy to recall and put to use.
In the current business world, where employees have less and less time to become experts, JIT information can help them have the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to achieve their goals.
